Saturation Actually Matters (And No, Gray Isn’t Always The Answer)
January 16, 2025Let’s talk about the elephant in the room since 2020: that sea of gray, white, and black in photography we’re drowning in. And no, I’m not talking about black and white photography.
As an editorial and advertising photographer in Austin, I see it everywhere.
And here’s the thing – choosing these colors just because “that’s what professional looks like” isn’t doing you any favors.
I’ve seen countless business owners choose this route and still miss the mark on looking professional.
Want to know why? Because it’s not about the colors – it’s about who’s capturing your story through that lens.
This isn’t me throwing shade at other photographers (pun intended). This is about finding someone who can tell your authentic story, whether that’s in vibrant color or sophisticated black and white.
Your visual choices should be intentional, not just a run-of-the-mill web designer said was “standard.”
It’s 2025, folks. Time to ditch the mindset that muted tones automatically equal professionalism.
What actually makes you look professional? High-end photography that captures your essence and leads people to engage with your message and with YOU.
Fun fact: A fashion industry friend told me these neutral palettes gained popularity because they felt safe during uncertain times. And that’s valid – when it’s intentional.
You’re not just a neutral feeling. You’re vibrant. You have layers. Yes, like Shrek.
This is where I come in. As an Austin-based editorial and fashion photographer working with both local and national publications, I specialize in:
- Uncovering those genuine layers of your brand
- Creating intentional set design with strategic props and locations
- Implementing color theory before the shot (because getting it right in-camera beats post-processing every time)
P.S. If you’ve read this far – I’m dropping a special New Year’s refresh offering next week in my newsletter.
